Dream recording device 'possible' researcher claims

The researchers have developed a way to record higher brain activity
A US researcher has said he plans to electronically record and interpret dreams.
Writing in the journal Nature, researchers said they have developed a system capable of recording higher-level brain activity.
"We would like to read people's dreams," says the lead scientist Dr Moran Cerf.
The aim is not to interlope, but to extend our understanding of how and why people dream.
For centuries, people have been fascinated by dreams and what they might mean; in ancient Egypt for example, they were thought to be messages from the gods.
More recently, dream analysis has been used by psychologists as a tool to understand the unconscious mind. But the only way to interpret dreams was to ask people about the subject of their dreams after they had woken up.
The eventual aim of Dr Cerf's project is to develop a system that would enable psychologists to corroborate people's recollections of their dream with an electronic visualisation of their brain activity.
"There's no clear answer as to why humans dream," according to Dr Cerf. "And one of the questions we would like to answer is when do we actually create this dream?"
Dr Cerf makes his bold claim based on an initial study that he says suggests that the activity of individual brain cells, or neurons, are associated with specific objects or concepts.

It would be wonderful to read people's minds”
End Quote Dr Moran Cerf UCLA
He found, for example, that when a volunteer was thinking of Marilyn Monroe, a particular neuron lit up.
By showing volunteers a series of images, Dr Cerf and his colleagues were able to identify neurons for a wide range of objects and concepts - which they used to build up a database for each patient. These included Bill and Hilary Clinton, the Eiffel Tower and celebrities.
So by observing which brain cell lit up and when, Dr Cerf says he was effectively able to "read the subjects' minds".
Dream catcher
He admits that there is a very long way to go before this simple observation can be translated into a device to record dreams - a "dream catcher". But he thinks it is a possibility - and he said he would like to try.
The next stage is to monitor the brain activity of the volunteers when they are sleeping.
The researchers will only be able to identify images or concepts that correlate with those stored on their database. But this data base could in theory be built up - by for example monitoring neuronal activity while the volunteer is watching a film.
Dr Roderick Oner, a clinical psychologist and dream expert, believes that while this kind of limited visualisation might be of academic interest, it will not really help in the interpretation of dreams or be of use in therapy.

"For that you need the entire complex dream narrative," he said.
Another difficulty with the technique is that to get the kind of resolution needed to monitor individual neurons, subjects had to have electrodes surgically implanted deep inside their brain.
In the Nature study, the researchers obtained their results by studying patients who had electrodes implanted to monitor and treat them for brain seizures.
Translating thoughts
But Dr Cerf believes that sensor technology is developing at such a pace that eventually it might be possible to monitor brain activity in this way without invasive surgery. If this were to happen it would open up a range of possibilities.
"It would be wonderful to read people's minds where they cannot communicate, such as people in comas," said Dr Cerf.
There have been attempts to create machine interfaces before that aim to translate thoughts into instructions to control computers or machines.
But in the main these have tried to tap into areas of the brain involved in controlling movement. Dr Cerf's system monitors higher level areas of the brain and can potentially identify abstract concepts.
"We can sail with our imaginations and think about all the things we could do if we had access to a person's brain and basically visualise their thoughts.
"For example, instead of just having to write an email you could just think it. Or another futuristic application would be to think a flow of information and have it written in front of your eyes."
Professor Colin Blakemore, a neuroscientist at Oxford University, believes that it is quite a jump from the limited results obtained in the study to talking about recording dreams.

News Updates! Obama makes historic appearance on ‘Daily Show’

Obama makes historic appearance on ‘Daily Show’
In an effort to boost voter enthusiasm ahead of a crucial midterm election, President Obama made an historic appearance Wednesday night on Comedy Central's "Daily Show with Jon Stewart."
The event marked the first time a sitting president appeared on the program and the first time just one guest had been scheduled for a single episode of the comedy show.
But it wasn't all laughs.
Stewart, who is filming his show in Washington this week in anticipation of his "Rally to Restore Sanity" event on Saturday, played a liberal Devil's Advocate Wednesday, channeling criticisms of the president often heard from disillusioned Obama supporters.
Stewart contrasted the tone of the 2008 campaign-- when Democrats were riding high on the president's message of "hope" and "change"-- to today, when the majority of Democrats say they are frustrated by the economy and show lagging interest in supporting Democrats at the polls next week.
"Are you disappointed in how it's gone?" Stewart asked.
Obama replied that the situation is no surprise given the country's high unemployment, underwater mortgages, and an overall poor economy. "Folks are going to be frustrated, and that's going to reflect on the political environment," Obama said. Obama said that in context, he's "feeling great about where the American people are, considering what we've gone through."
"We've gone through the two toughest years since The Great Depression."
Watch highlights from the interview:
Obama repeatedly expressed his frustration with Washington during the segment, railing against Republican obstruction and the culture of Congress.
He even endorsed the idea of changing Senate rules that require 60 Senators to vote to end a filibuster and approve legislation. "I would love not to have a 60 vote requirement," Obama said. He later added that he considers the D.C. culture "not always real healthy."
Stewart later wondered whether the "Yes We Can" slogan of 2008 still rings true today.
"Yes we can," Obama said, and then he paused. "But…"
"It's not going to happen overnight," the president finished over audience laughter.
But the most tense moment in Wednesday night's exchange centered on health care and devolved into harsh words and finger-pointing.
Stewart suggested the White House had been "timid" on health care by not making its position clearer and pressuring Congress to go further.
"I love your show, but this is something where I have a profound disagreement with you," Obama told Stewart.
"This notion that health care was timid?" Obama asked rhetorically. He said 30 million people are "going to get health care as a consequence" of the bill, insurers can no longer drop people, and kids can now remain on their parents' plans.
"I think most people would say this is the most significant piece of legislation in this country's history," Obama said, which drew applause from the audience.
Many Democrats have distanced themselves from the president and Democratic leadership this election year, but the president noted that not all electorally vulnerable Democrats have been running away from him.
"There are a bunch of folks who took really tough votes that they knew were bad politics because they knew it was the right thing to do," Obama said. He called out Virginia Rep. Tom Perriello, Ohio Rep. John Boccieri, and Colorado Rep. Betsy Markey by name. "I hope they are rewarded for their tough votes."
All three incumbents look likely to lose in their conservative districts. But the president has even scheduled a last-minute appearance with Perriello this Friday -- the president's first appearance for just a single House candidate.
Though there was laughter interspersed throughout Wednesday's show, the big jokes typically seen on the Daily Show were few and far between.
Stewart's questioning did lead to a lighter moment on the Comedy Central show, though. Asked why former Clinton Treasury Secretary Larry Summers was appointed one of Obama's chief economists in what was billed as a "change" administration, Obama was defensive.
"Larry Summers did a heck of a job," the president said in a very serious tone.
But the audience quickly began to laugh, clearly remembering George W. Bush's famous, "Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job," line to former FEMA chief Michael Brown during the Hurricane Katrina crisis.
Stewart interjected: "You don't want to use that phrase, dude."
Obama smiled and added, "pun intended."

MTN Nigeria has started the 1000 naira, 30 days 100mb data browsing/bundle. You can browse on your phone for a whole month with just 1000 naira. MTN also added a weekly internet bundle (limited to 25MB) going for N400 and a daily internet plan (limited to 10MB) going for N100. MTN has also dropped pay as you go browsing to 5kobo/kb from 15kobo/kb. N1,000 monthly internet bundle is likely to be a big relief for MTN subscribers in Nigeria. It is also the best response yet by MTN to free internet cheats on their network, as we believe that only affordable internet access will curb the proliferation of free internet cheats.
Getting MTN 100MB Internet

The first step is to ensure you have the appropriate MTN internet setting loaded on your mobile phone or modem. To get MTN internet settings, text Settings to 3888. An SMS containing your MTN internet settings will be sent to your mobile phone or modem. Save this setting. Load your mobile phone with at least N1,000. To activate the new MTN N1,000 100MB internet bundle, text 106 to 131. Text 2 to 131 to check your data usage.
It is most suited for phones

The MTN 100MB internet bundle is targeted at users browsing with mobile phones. Hence, MTN has put it in its mobile internet plan. Note the MTN 100MB internet bundle can be used with internet modems for browsing on a computer, but its limited data limit makes it mostly suited to browsing directly on mobile phones.

MTN 100MB internet plan is not for users who do lots of downloads and uploads. Remember that once you use up your 100MB internet access allocation, even if it is just 3 hours after you activated, your internet access will be deactivated. US regulators scold Google for taking e-mails

SAN FRANCISCO – The Federal Trade Commission is scolding Google, but not taking any further action against the company for collecting personal information transmitted over unsecured wireless networks.
In a Wednesday letter, the regulatory agency chastised Google Inc. for allowing people's e-mails, passwords and Web surfing activity to be scooped up for several years before management realized it. It took an inquiry from German regulators earlier this year for Google to realize it had been inadvertently pulling in information off of wireless networks as its cars took photos of neighborhoods around the world for its "Street View" mapping service.
The FTC says it closed its investigation because it's satisfied with a series of measures that Google announced last week in an effort to improve its internal privacy controls.
